“Marc, you and I are the glue for this family. We have to be okay, because if we’re not okay, the whole thing falls apart.” That was the conversation Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony had right after the finale of American Idol, where it was the last time they performed together on stage as a wife and husband.
Again! On stage! Together! At the Latin Grammy 2016 giving a powerful message to all separated moms and dads. JLo handed Marc “The Person of The Year Award” and both shared a kiss in front of the world. The audience went crazy assuming that they are back. It was so unexpected yet it was a tiny step in the right direction. It was the heart of the show, but it wasn’t about Marc and JLo being back together.
Away from spotlights, fame, performances, glamour, awards… away from the big Hollywood thing, they presented themselves as a mother and a father; a role of a life time.
People like Jennifer the celebrity, who is obsessed with love and turned it to be a constant theme in her songs, but people loved Jennifer the mother who took a stand at the Latin Grammy to show the world what being a mother looks like. You have to give love, show love, and spread love. You have to be a good role model. You have to be strong, empowered, responsible, and selfless. Obviously, Marc and Jennifer are totally aware of their responsibility as a parents regardless of being divorced.
During an interview with Access Hollywood, Jennifer said: “When we sing together, when they see us together, knowing our history, it brings certain nostalgia. They know we care about each other. We have two kids together, and they love to see that things are good between us.”
Mothers and fathers, you are the keepers of this culture. No matter how hard it is to cope with the idea of being a separated couple, you are still a mother and a father. Your kids aren’t the ones to repair your damaged egos after divorce. What I can tell you, what any other third party can tell you, is that you owe it to your kids to be the perfect role models. You are gifted to have them. Be a very good example to them. Show them love. Teach them appreciation. They are watching you. Just the way Jennifer Lopez said it in her book: “Here’s the thing about kids: They don’t do what you say, they do what you do. …So if they hear you fight or argue all the time, they are going to think that’s normal as well.”
If there were any awards to be given at this event, it would be mother and father of the year. I credit them for portraying parenthood with so much love. A love of a great purpose.
